Budgie ages
« on: July 11, 2012, 06:01:45 AM »
Hello,
just trying to get a rough age on my budgies.
What age does the black on the beak disapear? When i got my cobalt opiline male budgie a couple weeks ago he still had a black tip on his beak. its almost all gone now so i was wondering if that can tell me how old he is (he hasn't molted yet, so i know hes under 3-4 months)
My female Olive dominate pied opiline i think is 4-6 months, she doesn't have her bars down her face and her eyes are lighter (will try to get a pic) i keep finding little yellow feather all over the place, so she maybe molting now. How often do they molt?
Mom of Alex (1.5) and Justin (due sept)
2 budgies- Skylar and Lupe
4 chickens- Sasha, Lilly, Fancy and Lacey
1 dog- Cessy
and 10 +/- Satin Angora show rabbits

Budgies molt about twice a year generally speaking. This molting process can happen more often or less often depending on the bird's genetics and the temperature and humidity of their surroundings. Also, molts can take as long as months. Some birds are in a perpetual state of extremely slow molting as a result. If you are finding lots of stray feathers, your bird is probably still molting :)

Budgie's dark beak patches begin to fade almost instantly, but they fade much faster around fledgling time, which is roughly 5-6 weeks. Most birds will lose the patches altogether by the 10-13 week or so, but there are no hard and fast rules in budgie development. Just like human children, their bodies grow and develop at their own pace, and although we can give ball park figures, it is difficult at best to predict exactly when these things will happen.
