Yes, you may check the nest box. Try to do this when the female is not inside.

Pine shavings are preferable, if you can get your hands on them. I worry about the chemicals on newspaper: the eggs can actually absorb chemicals and bacteria through their shells. I would put a healthy supply inside the nest as well as outside. The female may push most of the stuff out of the nest at first: thats normal. She will then arrange her nest the way she likes it out of both places in and out.

Just be Patient. don't annoying the birds too much, they need to tack there time to prepare the box. Take care with the food this period I advice you to add Vitamin E to avoid empty eggs. also, Lettuce is good too.

i am patient, but keeping an eye on them is always better to avoid laying problems or straining.ill buy egg food because i think seeds and boiled eeggs arent enough for them especially in this period.

A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.
Lou Holtz

Be as a bird perched on a frail branch that she feels bending beneath her, still she sings away all the same, knowing she has wings.
Victor Hugo

Owners never really own birds, birds own their owners.
