Preventing Seed Moths

A Budgie Place Original

Seed moths (also known as flour moths) can sometimes be hiding in bird seed you buy from pet stores or feed stores. These moths are likely to leave the seed and get into your pantry. Take it from someone who has experienced this, even though the moths are relatively harmless, they are very annoying and they are hard to get rid of! Use this procedure to prevent seed moths from invading your home.

What You’ll Need:

  • Newly bought bag of bird seed
  • Freezer
  • Large air-tight container

Steps:

  • Step 1: As soon as you bring home a new bag of bird seed, put the bag into the freezer and leave overnight.

  • Step 2: Thaw the seed, pour into an air-tight container, and keep the container sealed.

Freezing the seed will kill any moths and moth larvae. Keeping the seed in a sealed air-tight container will prevent the seed from being infested again by moths that may already be in the home. If any happened to survive, the container should also prevent these from escaping and getting into your pantry.

If you currently have moths in your pantry, you can try pantry moth traps to get rid of them.
